Drosophila Hydei:
The life cycle for D. Hydei takes approximately 30 days. This species will grow slightly larger than the D. Melanogaster species and has a longer life cycle. This is our favorite species and is the easiest to feed out. Also, if your pet refused to eat the D. Melanogaster variety, they might be more interested in this species. From the time you receive them, you should keep them at room temperature and basically just leave them alone. After approximately 10 days, you will notice that more flies are being produced everyday.
At this point you may begin feeding them to your pet. To do this, simply tap the bottom of the container on a hard surface several times, just hard enough so all of the flies that were on the top of the container. Then carefully remove the cover and tap the container on it’s side gently over your pet’s enclosure so that they fall straight in. They are flightless, but they can climb smooth surfaces. Be sure to put the lid back on the culture shortly after.
